I have a 94 Grand Prix with 174k miles on it, never had the transmission servicd and never had a problem with it. Should I still have it serviced for preventive measures or is it a waste of time?

If the fluid is in good condition, a service or flush may be a good idea. If the fluid is burnt, you are taking a chance in having the fluid replaced. Sometimes with older transmissions, putting fresh fluid in will clean up deposits that are actually holding the transmission together. I have seen several older transmissions that worked fine, (drove into the bay to be serviced without problems) and after the flush they would not work!

Check with a qualified transmission expert before you decide!

If your tranny fluid is nice and clear, red colored of course, and ,as you say, never had a problem with it, why create one.
Tranny service makes money for repair shops.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
They had a program on tv about repair shops. The camera was taken in and a radiator flush was ordered. The bill was $100 or so
and the crew discussed it with the owner. The owner explained all the service that was performed.
Then the camera swung around and the flushing machine had bever been moved.
The owner ordered them off the premises.
So be careful out there

The only thing you MIGHT want to do is see if you need the transmission fluid flushed, sinde you have over 150k miles on it. Otherwise, as long as the fluid is at the right level, you should be fine.

I think that the transmission fluid should be changed every 100K miles, this will prevent upcoming problems to cause damage to your car

Drive aggressively on personal property(with permission of course!)

If you feel any slippin' or it has a hard time deciding which gear to be in, which you can tell by listening, or even better if you have an rpm gauge, and then have them work on it accordingly.

Yes, you tranny fluid is probably black and burnt. Tranny fluid should be changed at least every 60k. Get it flushed and filled.
