I lived on Lizard Island in the Great Barrier Reef for six months. How, and why I ended up there would fill a book, but surfice it to say that if your a diver the reef goes beyond spectacular. I've dove just about every ocean, and sea on the planet, including the North Pole, but nothing compares with the beauty, or the assortment of aquatic life found on the reef. There are many species of marine animals that are unique the to the reef itself, and can not be found in any other part of the world.

Much of the Great Barrier Reef is closed off to the public to protect the delicate reef environment. There are daily trips from the mainland, however, where people are allowed to dive, and snorkel. Fishing, or taking coral off the reef are punishable offenses and the penalties can include very heavy fines, and/or jail time. On some of the Islands, and under water reefs, where the public is prohibited, marine biologists, and other scientists setup laboratories to better understand the underwater world. The Great Barrier Reef is the largest reef system in the world.
