It is very important that you do not open the radiator cap while your car is hot or running. Wait quite a while after it's been running, to cool down. The radiator operates under pressure when it's hot, and if you pop the cap you could get scalding hot antifreeze splashing all over you.

Use a large rag to open the cap with just as a precaution.

I hope you have some coolant in your car already, as you can do serious damage to your engine block if you run it without any... Also, you need to find out why you're low on Coolant. Do you have a leak? This is a closed system, and you shouldn't have to keep adding coolant (antifreeze) unless you have a leak.

Lastly, make sure you don't spill any antifreeze on the ground, because cats like the taste... and this stuff is poison. If you do, mop it up.

If you are just adding some then you put it in the reservoir that is the overflow for the radiator. New cars no longer have a radiator cap.
If you are changing all the fluid then you need to go down below to the bleeder valve on the radiator and drain the old fluid out. Do not do this with the car running. after it has drained then add the new coolant make sure you close the valve at the bottom. once it fills run the car for a minute. Then open the valve again and drain the excess old fluid that was in your pump. once you see clean coolant close the valve. add more coolant and run the car again. add more coolant till full. add a little to the reservoir. and you are done flushing the coolant system. make sure the bleeder valve is closed. If this sounds too hard for you all the places that change oil change coolant. Let them do it.

No, it does not need to be running. You car manual should have all the information you need. Just identify the right container, and dump it down a funnel. That is all there is to it.

The water factor depends on where you live. In Connecticut's freezing temperatures, you just use the liquid straight from the bottle, so make sure you confirm before you put water!

Top off the radiator and install the radiator cap, fill the overflow bottle to full when cold line. Start the engine and let it get hot. Run the heater to max heat so you get the air out of the core system. You can add more coolant as needed thru your overflow bottle. recheck the level again when cold.
Good luck.......

if the car is hot do not add it. it is dnagerous for you and could warp or break your radiator.

so let the car cool down and then it doesnot have to be running .

your owners manual will have instructions for all liquid filling prociedures.
