Who invented "Knot Theory" and what are it's uses.

Knot theory is a branch of topology that studies the equivalences of knotted loops of string. 2 knots are equivalent if their strings can be manipulated in 3 dimensions without any cutting to be in exactly the same position. I am not sure who developed it, though there are several names like Siefort and Reidemeister which keep coming up. One active area of current research has to do with the way DNA behaves.
