Well it actually is normal. Normal is a range, with 5.5lbs being on the low end, and 10lbs being on the high end. When a baby is not born within a normal weight range it can indicate that something is wrong and we look at them very closely. Now if you are talking about the average size baby at birth, that would be 7-8lbs. About 60% of babies will be within this range when they are born.

These days, there is more information about the do's and don't during pregnancy, diet, no smoking etc. Therefore the average birth weight has increased over the last 20 years. I have had four children aged between 18 and 2yr old, all weighing between 9lb 9oz and 8lb
I would like to think my babies where way more cute than a baby gorilla, even if they did hurt me more!

Well said ladyzen!

First, I do not think most women think 10lb babies are normal…the average weight is probably more like 8 to 9 lbs. Second, who can say what is ‘normal’ for someone else? Third…marry a gorilla, if you think they have cuter babies1 ;)

Apparently 7lbs is average, but you have to have big ones and little ones to get an average.

My first was 6lb 14oz almost average, Number 2, I ordered an average size with a small head.... I got a 10lb boy. Ouch.....Bigger than our Christmas turkey.

Both my babies were far cuter than any hairy gorilla. You obviously haven't got kids.

10lbs sounds like a nice, healthy, bouncing baby. Tough on the mother of course, but I'm sure any mother would rather push out a big baby than a tiny one that needs to go straight into the Special Baby Care Unit, wouldn't you say?

I don't think the women think a 10 pound baby is normal but really once it's 10 pounds what are you going to do?

LOL

I have known many women who gave birth to 10 lb babies. It seems to be more common these days.

I think the average for a girl is 7lb 6 oz, and 7lb 8 oz for a boy.

Being that we have absolutely no control over our baby's birth weight, who cares?

I mean, as long as you both come out of it healthy and in one piece, who gives a cr@p what's "normal" or not?
