I just started using yahoo mail from a prior AOL type account with a "You've Got Mail" verbal notification. How do I set that up with yahoo?

If you use yahoo messenger and leave it open it will tell you when you have mail.

Otherwise you would have to use a program like Ypops! (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/E-mail/Mail-Utilities/YahooPOPs.shtml)
so you can have your mail downloaded to a client such as Outlook, incredimail, or Thunderbird which all have sound notifications.

You can do it either with Yahoo! Messenger or you can use Firefox with the Yahoo! Mail notifier extension.

You will also need to grab an "You've got mail" .wav file somewhere on the web.
