Usually it equals 4. But it can equal 5, for extremely large values of 2.

I'm not sure if this is a trick question but let's see what we can do with it:

If the symbol represents number "two" then the sum is "four" (4 in standard everyday notation)

But if the symbol 2 is used in a different context then you have to define the code you are using in order for the question to be answered (not to mention that you have to clarify if the symbol + refers to addition).

If you are referring to a number system other than decimal (for example hexadecimal) then the answer is again four (4) since in any number system with a base greater than or equal to 3, the symbol 2 stands for number "two".
If on the other hand you are referring to binary numbers then you are mistaken, since there's no symbol 2 in this number system.

But if you feel adventurous you can try this one:
2+2 is whatever you like because all numbers are equal.
Let me prove this last statement:
Assume that a = 1 -> a^2 = a -> a^2 - a = a - a -> a*(a-1) = 0

The last equation has two solutions
a = 0
or
a-1 = 0 which means that a = 1
Since we begun assuming that a=1 the first solution indicates that 0 = 1. In general n = n+1 for any value of n, which means that all numbers are equal so indeed 2+2 equals as much as you like!
