At first I thought that was a silly question - very subjective and perhaps asked by someone non-Catholic. But I myself was raised Catholic and taught to respect the Church's hierarchy, and yet I have to admit the Pope always creeped me out. If I think about it, it probably has to do with the way he dresses and his mysterious inaccessibility. I really dig Jesus - can't think of a thing he said that I disaree with. But I don't equate the Pope with Jesus. There have definitely been some evil popes throughout history. And I think the infallibility thing didn't come about until the early 1800s - I remember always wondering about the Pope's inability to make a mistake; it didn't jive with the whole oppressive atmosphere in the church, and the pope didn't sound anything like the Jesus I knew. Bet the Pople would get some cool press and a lot more followers if he dressed nicely - a soft gray suit with a nice little flower; no crown or funny hat. He could carry a fancy crook like a shepherd, though.

Well, many theologians throughout history have interpreted the eschatological passages of the bible which refer to anti-christ as pointing not to a single individual who will appear in the last days but rather to the papal office itself making each successive pope the anti-christ. Although this has never been a majority view it has gone through periods of varying acceptance. It was probably most widely held in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries when anti-catholic feeling were very strong throughout much of Europe and North America.

I don't think they seem evil. The Pope is suppose to represent the opposite of evil, and he's suppose to represent the Church. But, whether it is the pope or a bishop or a priest, or any "man of God," he is still a man--not a God, so he is fallible to sin. There have been many atrocities and evil perpetrated in the name of religion in our history, but I don't think today's leader of the Catholic Church is evil. In a world where we continuously fight against the evil men do, I wouldn't think he possesses it, but you are entitled to your feelings.

Too much power, it is often as though the Pope isn't human but a diety himself, given far too much say in the church.
(I'm not catholic so I really don't give a fig about him but I wouldn't include Pope John Paul II in this category...he was a good person-Pope or not).
