They were the Minnesota Lakers before the LA Lakers. Minnesota is the land of 10,000 lakes. Also the Utah Jazz were the New Orleans Jazz before they moved. Sometimes the city keeps the name and other times they dont. IE the Houston Oilers moved to Tennessee and kept the name until they found a better fitting one. Tennessee Titans.

The LA Lakers originated in Minnesota and were called the Minneapolis Lakers because of all of the lakes in that area. Bud Grant, former coach of the Minnesota Vikings used to play for them.

Why they didn't change the name when LA got the team is beyond me.
