Depends on the player, really. Everyone's got a strength and a weakness.

The three main "roles" are tanks (keep a critter's attention), dps (damage-per-second, ie killing the critters), and healing.

Warriors are best as tanks, followed by paladins and druids. Tanking isn't so bad, if you've got the gear - but if you lose the critter's attention, it'll be chaos. Tanks are the center of attention.

DPS is the land of wizards, warlocks, hunters, and rogues, though the other classes can do pretty good too. You need to be focused, but when things go sour, you're on your own. If you're by yourself, things can be tough, so you'll need strategies for soloing.

Healer is always needed, but a thankless job. If you're in a large group (20+), forget paying attention to the scenery - you'll be too busy trying to keep people alive. Every group will want a healer - but you'll be the first to be blamed if someone dies. Soloing can be very slow as a healer.

Hunters, mages, and warlocks are fairly easy, and very strong. After that, probably rogues, shaman, and paladins. Druids are probably the most complex, due to the various forms they can take.

if you are new to game, and figure that you'll run solo most of the time, i would suggest a warlock, or hunter... they could be classified as solo'able classes because of the "pet" factor. two on one. mages and rogues can solo too, and will kick "butt" if you know how to play them correctly. if you know that you and buddy are going to running together and hope to do alot of instances later on... i would go with priest, shammy, druid or pally since they are almost always welcomed in a group, guild or raid. warriors may need to be baby'd for a while, but once they're all grown up... watch out! i suggest lock or hunter for complete noobs and a druid for people who have played games like wow.
but on my bias opinion, LOCKS ARE THE BEST CHARACTER TO BE!!!

Warriors, Priests and Mages are always needed. No one can tank like a warrior, heal as well as a priest or do AoE like a mage. That said, the best thing to do is play around, find a class you like, and master it. There is always room for good players, who aren't ninjas/wipers/whiners/ etc. Personally, I love my warlock. Fear is a great kiting aid, soulstones and healthstones are welcome at every party, and I do great DoT and mana draining.
