I assume the troops know what to do already during their rehersals. Wouldn't it damage their voice- continuous shouting and screaming ?

It's essentially so that the troops in the parade carry the moves out in time with eachother. If nobody was up front giving the orders, then everyone would do the moves at different times and it would look a complete shambles! (Trust me, I know.).

I was in a parade when my last station closed and the wind was blowing so heavily in our ears that we couldn't hear the orders! We had practiced for months previous, so we knew what orders come next. Problem is that sometimes, the SWO (Station Warrant Officer, RAF Equiv to Sgt Maj) can make mistakes and when he does, we have to follow the new orders where possible, so we still need to know what he is saying. Our section commander had to relay the orders to us, we were out of time with the other half of the parade, but we were in time together, so it still looked good.

The Parade Commander (Sgt Major/Station Warrant Officer) has been taught to use his stomach to shout the orders, not so much his throat (I used to be a drill instructor), so his throat is fine post parade.

During parade ground training the troops use the commands to time their action. Without the command, they may all do a particular action (such as eyes right) on a different step. The commands are heard well by the troops and they always know what command is being called as they have heard it so many times, even if the viewing crowd don't.

Having been a soldier myself, hopefully i can answer your question! The RSM / CSM needs to shout in order that everyone hears the words of command. Also, it just wouldnt be right if he/she didnt shout! They have to show that they are in control of the squad, and demonstrates this by the power of their voice.
I have taken parades and had to shout verbal commands - you learn to propel your voice from deep inside your stomach. I am sorry if this sounds odd but Iam not sure how else to describe it. You dont shout as normal, you just propel your voice using your stomach.
Your voice can get a bit sore if you've done days worth of rehearsals though, and a wee drop of port does help in this instance! Soldiers know all the words of command and know when to expect them, but timing is everything. The words may not be clear to somebody without Military training, but all soldiers can differentiate between the commands, however spoken. All persons taking parades have thier own unique voice, but the commands still remain the same no matter what style / accent they are spoken in. I hope this answers your question.

I'm in the Air Force and our equivalent is a Chief Master Sergeant (CMSgt). The commands are shortened miltary facing commands. They are understandable to someone who knows what they are. He shouts it because its a parade and so that his message can be heard by all members that need to hear it. Shouting emphasizes their movements and adds a sense of power or finesse especially when everybody moves at the same time. Their shouting and screaming doesn't hurt their voice because by that pooint they are used to it. And no the military isn't all shouting and screaming. That gets old and tiring quick. I haven't been yelled at since my Tech School, only talked to very loudly.

the reason you cant hear the clear commands is because he is facing away from you and the sound waves bounce back causing distortion
