I'm not sure you've given enough information to fully answer the question here, but most likely the filament is shaped like a cylinder. The formula for the volume of a cylinder is pi*r^2*h (where r is the radius of the base and h is the height) and the formula for the lateral area (area of the middle) of a cylinder is 2*pi*r*h. Each base would be a circle with an area of pi*r^2.
