I wish I would've skipped them. The classes were really long and boring and neither one of us felt like we got much out of it. In my opinion (and definately my husbands...he whined every week about going) they were a waste of time and money. This is our first pregnancy but most of what I've learned has come from books, the internet, family members, and other mothers. Go and pick up a few good books from the store, that's all you really need. Any questions you have can be directed at your OB-GYN, midwife/nurse, or friends and family. Or try joining some message boards for new and expectant mothers.

It depends. Most hospital based labor classes will teach you how to be a patient. Be good and do what you're told. The "breathing" exercises that you will learn in such a class are useless.

Take a class that teaches you to be an informed consumer and that will really teach you how to manage the labor pain. Some good examples are Hypnobirthing, The Bradley Method, and Birthing from Within.

Skipping classes altogether is not a great idea. Its better to be informed about what is happening and if something unusual happens you know what is going on.

My husband thought the same thing. He thought all they would do is teach you how to breath. He was surprised how much and fun and how much he learned though it all. It really helped me being a first time mom and was worried about how things were done, what happens if this happens and it was really nice to see other pregnant women whom who can talk about what is helping them through all the pain and discomfort. I recommend it and they saw you will have as easier labor since they will show you in the program what will happen and what the labor room looks like and all the hospital rules. It is good to know them ahead of time instead of having to ask when the labor hits because at that time you can hardly think about anything else but the pain. Best of luck either way you go.

i have 2 kids and did not go to any labour classes.with my first i wanted to go, but baby arrived a month early.second baby,i felt confident enough not to go to any classes
i felt the same way about them as you.
if u have an epidural u cant feel the contractions anyway and wouldnt know when to push.
labour classes are useful only if u have 100% natural delivery.
they are also a great place to meet other new moms .
you can read about all the labour experience online .
good luck with the baby

I think it depends on the mother. I took labor classes and I feel they helped. Not only in the delivery room but also during my pregnancy because I was around other women that were going through the same thing as me. Yet my sister-in-law skipped the child birth classes and she did just fine.

I took labor classes with my first one and I will tell ya what they are a JOKE... They teach you breathing but you don't follow through with it when your in the moment.... I didn't go back after my first one I have had 3 other kids and all are fine, they recommend those classes so you know what to expect and breathing tech.

No, it is a waste of time.

You watch a birth video.
They talk to you about the opitions on pain killers which you could research yourself.
They show you a couple breathing ways which believe me you will figure out on your own when it comes time!
