You definitely need a passport.

Although the no-frills airlines say you need a photo id, which could mean driving licence or residents card, I tried it with my spanish residencia - flying from Spain. They also needed my passport! So it seems that passports are still needed to travel within Europe - Lord knows why! Thought that was the idea of a EU!!!

I've travelled to France from England with university photo card. Although I did this on the ferry and was told by UK imigration before I left that when I arrived in France I maybe sent straight back. If you desparately need to leave the UK now, either take the ferry to Bilbao or go to the passport office in london for a new passport (I'd do the latter).

I've tried sitting on a photographic drivers licence, I wouldn't want to travel to Spain on one.

Well, interestingly enough, I just booked a flight with a well known orangey budget airline to Spain and their email confirmation says "****** does not issue tickets, so please make a note of these details. All you need to check in is your passport (or other approved photographic ID ) and booking reference". I would ring and ask them first, but I would be curious to know too!

in theory no, but last time i went to spain the only time they checked my passport was when i left the u.k, i dont think they even check if i had a passport when i arrived and left Spain. but yeah i would think you can only fly if you have a passport.
you can use licences within the uk.
