I know some people believe that accountants just balance checkbooks, do taxes and have to be really good at math.... are there any others than these?

That internal auditors have or need accounting degrees.
That accountants are boring
That accountants have good credit
That you can't be an accountant without being a CPA
That you need a CPA to be a financial analyst

yes.
so many folks think accounting is boring. It is NOT. Accountants do plenty of exciting things to help business owners. They are more like "business engineers" than bookkeepers or tax preparers.

A common misconception is that Accounting is bookkeeping. It is not. Another one is it is that it is Finance. It is not.
