It broke my heart to read that the baby's father had to give him up because he can't afford to support his little son.

No one should have to do that. Its inhuman.

If Madonnna really gives a sh1t about this poor little tike then why doesn't she just sponsor him - that would allow him to stay in his own country with his family and probably wouldn't cost her very much.

Why does she feel the need to take him out of his country and culture and away from his family! Its horrible to think that they may never see him again.

How would you feel if your son, nephew etc was taken away by a rich foreigner because you were poor, and you knew you'd never be able to see him again? If it was me I'd be heartbroken.

If she wants to adopt a child there are plenty in Britain who need adoption. She keeps saying she loves this country and its her home, then why doesn't she adopt a British child? Or is it that the "colour scheme" is not right? She doesn't want a white one!!!

I totally agree that these children are like fashion accessories for celebs with more money than sense. It used to be Prada handbags and little toy dogs. Now its African babies. The "must have" accessory of the season. Sick sick sick.

I can not even begin to put into words how much I agree with you! I'm so relieved to know that there are other people who feel there's something very wrong about this adoption.

If she really cares she should offer financial support to the child’s real family so that he can be brought up by his own relatives and equally importantly by people who knew and loved his mother.

Your point about children desperately in need of homes in this country is spot on. I'd like to also add that if she is desperate to adopt a foreign child, there are plenty with no traceable relatives.

When I heard about Madonna's plans to adopt I was shocked. Only a little while ago in an interview on E! Entertainment Television, she was recorded saying "It's a struggle to balance my career with my children."http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/sfgate/detail?blogid=7&entry_id=5043 I assume that the baby she will be adopting will be looked after by hired help, much like her own children. So why not just pay the child’s own family to bring the baby up?

A lot of people are blinded by Madonna's wealth when making their mind up on this issue. Plucking one child from the country of it's birth and spoiling it with material wealth is not going to make the world a better place.

oh yes, in total agreement with that... there is a developing trend of consumer parenting - while not quite the genetic designer babies it's the next best thing for self indulgent self important celebrities.

I read that the children were read Madonna's new children's book and played with her (a spot of very cynical marketing madge wasn't it) Then she chose the "best" one (on what basis???? the most photogenic?). Whatever criteria she used it amounts to an interview for these children, where one lucky (wish there was a way to express sarcasm) one can be displaced for their culture, seperated from their existing family and invited to live on planet Mads Inc.

Makes you sick. Makes me sick anyhow. And grants to fund an orphanage is crass lip service to helping an impoverished country. her money would be better spent as a donation with no strings attached to that country - and many others.

sadly, this won't be the end of this phenomenon. As long as developing countries are under the cosh of debt repayments and harsh restructuring plans dictated by the IMF people will be be impoverished and celebs will be able to pick and choose the children of the poor.

I think celebs like Madonna would do far better to support some kind of charity project which helps these children live in their own culture and improve it for the good of the whole of the community. That poor boy is bound to feel at odds with a the family set up and what happens when he grows up and wants to know his history?
Adoption of children from overseas is all very well but some provision must be made for keeping the culture of the child and a link with the childs roots. I hate the way these poor children are treated like the latest accesory by celebs, they are children not cute designer items.

Madonna Love's PR she has been saying she wants a baby for ages to help save her marriage! However at 48 it's not the best Idea and she want to be in Shape for those tours that rake in all the cash for her.

I think PR is Madonna's middle name its a huge issue in Show biz and the Stars with good PR are the ones who go far and stand the test of time

Firstly what pressure to put on a child saving your marrige ( However we have to remember Madonna opens her mouth to hock and offend)
And with Africa been the big Nation to help Madonna has to be seen going one step further than the Live 8 she did

Also some sexy movie star like Ms Jolie who has had a colourful sexual life like Madonna has can't be doing something Madonna Hasn't done. Some stars use Little Dogs the lower celebs like Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton and Geri Helliwell however the bigger the name the bigger the accessorie.

Yes Ms Jolie and Madonna want to help these unfortunate children who have poor and simple lives but they know and expect no better. So is it fair to kit them in designer tog and flash live styles and the posh schooling and expect them to still have knowledge of their culture and birth place and be able to apreciate where the came from and not only apriciate what they have gained.

How does this help a child accept and understand their culture?

I loved her music as a kid she was not the best of singers but her drive used to be ambition and I liked that now her drive is acting selfish and not wanting to accept she is 48.

There are children all over the world in need of parents who need love, Stabiliy and somebody to bond with and care for them Not only in Africa

Also there are 100's of African children in Orphanages waiting for their chance to find a loving family

Whats the deal with taking a baby from a family over an orphan or even funding/sponsoring an orphanage or this babys family over not singling out one cute baby for adoption! Madonna has enough cash to help more than one baby.

Well of course she has but she could be funding and helping these people and children out by investing money like many other stars do

But when Madonna does something we have to know that is why she must adopt because she has to be seen as helping and not only is it sad for her family that she is that way out is it selfish to all those other African orphans

Hi, I know everyone seems to think that madonna will mess up this child and that it is better she gives the money to the village! I am Malawian and having had a father who has worked so hard his entire life to bring us up and out of Malawi, I think madonna is setting a greta example as to what people should do with thir time and money! Giving the village moeny...what good will that do, what is the point of they can not sustain them selves, shopa aren't as common in the Mlawian villages, you can't just wake up and take a walk to the shops! They are a farming nation, most people actually grow their own food and rear their own animals for food!!! Money would play nothing in their world!

In Malawiaan custom, a man is not involved in the rearing of a child! Mr Banda's wife died, she did not know how to look after the child and dumped him in the orphanage, he has agreed for the doption to go through, if he gets any money, he has sold his child!!! The way I see it, as a Malawian, this child has been given a oportunity of a life time, I wish it were me!!!

I have a feling that if she chose to adopt an asin or oriental child, like Angelina did none of this discussion would be going on, is it the extreme circumstances that bother you so much!!!!

People, just thinnk, she wants to love a child, as her own flesh and blood, a child who was given up by it's own father!!! Wouls you rather she returned the child and took one form this country, is trhat what it is really about!!!

I sgn off, as a malawina and proud that she has taekn the step tpp take on one of my impovrished people.

Well it wouldnt get as much press attention if she adopted a British child thats for sure. I really feel that celebrities see these children as fashion accessories and I guess now that Angelina has one Madonna wants one too. And we havent heard anything about her for a while so I guess thats part of it too. As you say...she should and could sponsor many, many children with her wealth and taking a child away from its parents when it doesnt need to be that way is criminal to me. But then people who have that kind of money...more than they can or would ever spend and dont do more with it than brag about it are worse than criminals to me anyway.

there are plenty of orphans with no living relatives she could and perhaps should of chosen to adopt, I agree she should of sponsored this and many other children instead of ripping him from home and into the blaze of media attention he recieved on his arrival in the UK, yes he may have more material goods with madonna but does this mean his quality of life will be better personally i don't think so he will be constantly hounded by the media for the restr of his life, making this a selfish act on the part of madonna who it appears has more money than sense-I.m in no way anti - madonna the artist she is a great performer, however this is madonna the rich using cash for publicity at the cost of a childs quality of life

She is following a new trend for those who have so much money thay don't know what to do with it.
Adopt a child from outside the country take it away from any family or friends, create herself a lot of publicity.
We have children here that desperately need a home that have no living parents to care for them.
She won't be looking after it one of her many aids will do that for her, then when it's old enough she'll pack him off to boarding school. The stars have it hard don't they

You have a point! There are kids all over the world with NO family at all. Better still, donate what she would have paid to bring this child up to a childrens´cause, that way so many more benefit. Seems a little like a publicity stunt or perhaps she just wants to keep up with the other stars who have done the same.

It would mean the kid would live a much better life. I have much respect for a father who would give up his own child because he knows the child will be better off. It's one of the most selfless things a parent could ever possibly do.

I think you just don't like Madonna, so you will insult her no matter what she does. Stop wasting emotion on hate and find something to love instead. Peace.
