Unwelcome thoughts, that nag at you, i have experienced these, and they are really unpleasant. I think everyone does, at times. My worst, were when i had my first baby, i never dare tell anyone, as it scared the hell out of me. I now think it was a form of post natal drepression, as i have spoken to other women over the years, who experienced the same. Thank god, it did not happen with my future children, although i always feared it would. Very unpleasant indeed, feel like you are going crazy. I think anxiety can also bring them on, horrible...

An intrusive thought is a thought that comes into your head that is bothersome and has to be forcefully ignored. You usually hear the term associated with trauma victims. As in "thoughts of the rape keep popping into my head and I can't get them out". That would be an example. However, people with depression or anxiety often complain about them a lot. Sometimes they can be in the form of obsessions. "i keep thinking my hands have germs on them (the intrusive thought being that the hands are contaminated) so i have to wash them". Most people experience intrusive thoughts from time to time. It's basically that nagging voice that makes us worry. It only becomes "intrusive" in the clinical sense though, when it is interefering with daily functioning.
Hope this helps.

Intrusive thoughts are a phenomena that can co-occur with obsessive-compusive disorder (OCD) but I believe that everyone has them at some stage or another. By definition the thought is unwelcome and distressing, and they tend to be about unpleasant topics. They cannot be ignored and distraction proves futile.
Common obsessions are:
Fears of contamination by germs, dirt or chemicals
Aggressive thoughts about physically harming a loved one
Intrusive sexual thoughts or urges.
Excessively doubting own morals or religious convictions
They may occur with compulsions or without, however carrying out a compulsion reduces the person's anxiety but unforunately makes the urge to perform the compulsion again stronger each time as a cycle sets in.
I have experienced all of these at some stage and I am perfectly normal (woof zing perkang boing !)

My understanding of the english definition is that it is not welcome. It is a thought which occurs against your moral boundaries. One could assume it comes from the devil within you.
I think we all experience thoughts good and bad. Therefore intrusive thoughts are experienced by everyone, except those who welcome all thoughts. If you are open to listen to all arguments, then an intrusive thought cannot exist.
I don't think we could categorise people into one camp or another. This is because people can change the way they think, and especially their attitude to the thoughts they have. If you welcome all thoughts, you cannot have an intrusive thought.

An intrusive though is one you wouldn't have through your own choice and may be out of character for you. It may also have nothing to do with what's happening that that moment in time.
I think we all have that experience some time or other.

an intrusive thought is any thought that interferes with the current thought you are having. It "intrudes" and is generally recurrent, like when a person obsesses about something.
