My son grinds his teeth while he's asleep. we've already taken him to a doc and they say it's fine, but it doesn't "sound" fine. i don't like giving him any type of sugar or caffeine, what causes such a tendency?

It's called "Bruxism". Here's a Google search on it.

I am not a Dr., so maybe you'll just stop reading. However I am the mother of 3 sons ages 12, 9, and 3.

Try some classical music very softly in his room as he sleeps.

It helps the prefrontal cortex activate and prolong REM sleep patterns for a more restful sleep.

It's normal. Sugar of Caffeine won't make this occur. If your son has permanent adult teeth then I would buy him a mouth piece (a rubber piece that keeps the teeth from breaking - mostly used when fighting). If your son has his baby teeth then I wouldn't worry. They usually grow out of it.

It is a completely subconscious thing. Teeth grinding in his sleep isn't something he is doing on purpose. HE doesn't even know he is doing it. If he is old enough, his dentist may suggest a night guard to keep his teeth from touching. But if his dental health is good, then you have nothing to worry about. (Except how it is grinding on your MENTAL health....Sorry, couldn't resist!)
