Spanish and French people seem to think that the English love potatoes and would eat potatoes for every meal, this is very amusing to them. What worries me is that it seems to be true. I could eat potatoes for every meal. If I don't eat them for a while I miss them. I'm English is this a bad sign?

Seriously, do the English love potatoes (like more than in other countries) and if so , why?

Been talking to my wife (an American) about this, cos she now lives over here, and she loves the fact that in her words, "The English have potatoes really worked out." She tells me that we treat potatoes like the Americans treat corn - we name our varieties, make recipes for specific varieties, things that only really work with particular types - recipes for Charlottes, Vivaldis, King Edwards, you name it. So yeah, I reckon the English have a special relationship with spuds.

Potatoes are a staple of the British diet, pasta , rice, millet, various pulses and lentils are staples of other national diets. Potatoes suit English conditions, (soil and weather) they store well and provide a dietary mainstay during winter when arable crops are scarce. This grow and store policy historically suited islands like UK and Ireland, where growing seasons and climate limit what can be grown, and ready access to alternative foods would not have been available. Potatoes are great! Who cares about the French and Spanish - without potatoes we may never have crushed Napoleon , and sunk the Spanish armada !

I love mashed spuds with a drop of single cream and butter in, I don't eat spuds everyday but don't think I could go more than a week without them either, you can do tons of stuff with spuds, very versatile.

I think we do because we have so many different ways of serving them as opposed to boiled or chipped, just out of interest are there any americans (who have never been to england) that have tasted home made chips or cheesy mash

Probably because its a crop we can grow really well with our climate...hence it being a staple food of the middle ages and the poor as they couldn't really afford meat.
