try picasa. they have a lot more features then b&w. i'm pretty sure its free.

You don't give the extension of your picture.
If it is a jpg, insert it into a Word file.
Right-click on it and select "picture toolbar."
cl the "grayscale" or "black & white" options.
You can also alter contrast level and brightness and crop with the picture toolbar
