Project using all reciepts that teens get and combining them with an entire class

It would be interesting to calculate the average amount spent on various categories: clothes, food, and etc. Then you could do an analysis of how it differs based on gender or specific age or income or some other demographic.

Collect the receipts for a month. Divide into categories, total. Calculate daily expenses for food, gas, housing (utilities), clothes, entertainment, misc.

Then ask kids to go "shopping" on paper to actual stores and give them an allowance they have to adhere to for the month. Here's the twist; they are single parents with two small kids under age 4....

Collect all the receipts and trace each to the industry it belongs to. show the kids which industry they cointribute to and where the jobs are with regard to these industries to give them an idea of a good career choice.
