If you have an artificial tree.. then you could put it up the day after Thanksgiving or there about.. but if its real.. You might want to wait a little closer to Christmas.. since the lights and heat in the house dry out the tree (regardless of how much you water the bottom) making it a fire hazard.. which would be a nightmare before Christmas...hahah

If you cut your own tree down, it is fresh enough to leave up for 6 weeks or more. My husband has cut a fresh tree down every year (last year my son did the honors). We put it up the Sat. after Thanksgiving and always leave it up until several weeks into Jan. It is never dried out. You cannot do this with a tree from a lot. Some of them were cut months ago and sunk into a pond to keep until Nov. Some of them will only last a week or two. Certain varieties last longer than others, too.
If this is your first time putting up your own tree, why not come up with your own tradition? Or try different suggestions from here on Yahoo?
Enjoy the holidays!

We put our artifical tree up the day after Thanksgiving. If you have a real one - you might want to wait a little closer to Christmas so it doesn't dry out.

...I put up my christmas tree the day before thanksgiving and I put white lights on it and we put decorator paper trukeys the kind that fold out with tissue bellys on it and some plastic popcorn rope, and I put gold bulbs on the tree to make the lights shine on the tree... for the top.. if you go to a party store they have those center pieces that fold out and have foil sprays with little turkeys on them and I top the tree with that...its a center of conversation for thanksgiving dinner and then the day after thanksgiving or the weekend after we just add our decorations and remove the turkeys, we got 2 holidays out of our tree...we have a fake tree though...give it a try...it may become a new tradition...this also gives the house a more special feeling and a more holiday feeling....I love thanksgiving its almost better than christmas...I feel like its almost a forgotten holiday we all eat and just enjoy that family feeling...vote for me if you like the idea...happy holidays....god bless...

I would say most families put it up on the day after Thanksgiving because it is officially the countdown to the Christmas season. That is the day most people do the majority of their shopping, the stores have excellent bargains and people are in the Christmas mood.

We put up our tree 2 weeks to the day before Christmas.
We don't take it down until 2 weeks to the day after Christmas.
We always put up a real tree so after a month our family room is filled with dryed pine needles. LOL

Artificial -- On or around Thanksgiving so you can enjoy it for about 6 weeks
Real -- A week before Christmas...otherwise you're going to have needles everywhere and a royal mess!

Well,
My family puts up our tree on Thanksgiving while we wait for the turkey to get done. It starts off the holiday season. Hope this helps and good luck!
