Every once in a while you can hold a mirror up to the tank, maybe add a new plant or rearrange the stuff that is in there. And just always make sure the tank water is clean.

Actually I'm not mean, it gives the fish excitement for a minute or 2 then you take it away and he feels as though he won and it boost his self esteem.

I work in a pet store and actually bettas in there normal habitat live in a section 1ft x 1 ft there entire lives. It may seem cruel but when you introduce a betta into a large tank it's like dropping you into the middle of the ocean with nothing around you. Keep in mind betta's are breed in small tanks and should be kept in small tanks when by them selves. It lowers the stress level on them and as for mirrors very bad idea because there stress level could raise to the point were they die. Put alot of live plants in the tank. They normally like to hide and live plants put less stress on them. Make sure there is a corner that they can build there bubble nest where it will not get disturbed by any type of filter. And betta's are tropical fish please make sure your water is staying at 70 degree's to 78 degree's will make them very happy also. The cold water has a very low oxygen level which may make your fish lathergic and seem unhappy warm water will hold oxygen better than cold.

Buy a real plant for the tank. It helps oxygenate the water and might spark him up a bit. Make sure you haven't changed his food too. I also read that Betas like smaller tank, especially goldfish bowls.

Smaller bowl? MIRRORS???? You people are MEAN! In their natural environment, bettas live in rice paddies. They like real plants, but a mirror will make him think he has a competitor who he will want to fight to the death. Make sure the water quality is good, and give him an area where his bubbles won't be disturbed.

Get a heater for your tank and add a few tropical fish like some platys or mollys.
