I know this sounds really stupid,and maybe I'm a complete moron,but when I try to type something in a column,like a recipe,or a list,I can't do it-it always comes out like a paragraph!What is wrong?how do I type a column? What keys to use?

I think I know what you'e asking. In Word, just do view, Page Layout. Then, you see the ruler on the top of the word document. Simply highlight the text you want formatted, and grab the little triangle near the 6 inch mark, and drag it coser to 1 inch, the text should reformat itself to fit the margin.
Otherwise, use Excel. It's harder, I know, but type up the text in new cells, and then print without gridlines. Good luck!

Go to the Format Tab, then click columns. Select how many, then type with columns.

in what program? wordpad? microsoft word? open office?

you will have to specify what program you're talking about to get an answer which is completely relevant to what you're doing.
