I am trying to help my grandaughter with her home work.
How do you actually work it out on paper starting with
56)4723

Sorry can't find a key that does a line above the 4723

Another way of tackling this is to divide 4723 by two factors of 56 which when they are multiplied together themselves equal 56. That is not as daunting as it sounds.
7 x 8 = 56

So first divide 4723 by 8 which equals 590.375.

Then divide 590.375 by 7 which gives 84.339...

This is exactly what you get when you divide 4723 by 56.

The answer can be given as 84.3 to 3 significant figures but it is better to say the answer is 84 with 0.339 remaining. To express the remainder as a fraction: 0.339 x 56 = 19, so remainder is
19/56.

This approach could well cover some arithmetic not yet covered by your grandaughter so then it is back to long division:

84
56) 4723
448
243
224
19 remainder 19/56

a) 56 does not go into 47
b) How many times does 56 go into 472. Answer 8. Your gd will have to do some multiplication to get to this point: 7 x 56 =392, 8 x 56 = 448, 9 x 56 = 504. The last one is too much so the answer is 8. Put the 8 above the 2.
c) take 448 from 472, gives 24. Write that down as shown.
d) Bring down the 3 to give 243.
e) How many times does 56 go into 243. Answer is 4, write down 4. 4 x 56 = 224.
f) Take 224 from 243, gives 19, hemce remainder is 19/56

4723/56 = 84.33928571 (rounded)

a) find out if 56 can be factorised - 56 = 7*8

b) the number can now be divided in stages by 7 then 8 or vice versa

c) 4723/7 = 674.7142857 (rounded)

d)674.7142857/8 = 84.33928571 (rounded)

therefore, 4723/56 = 84.33928571 (rounded)

if the divisor, (this case 56) cannot be factorised, you will have to use long division

i hope that this helps

treat it as though it were a fraction (a fraction line is another way of writing a divided-by ( ÷ ) symbol):

4723
-----
56

then cancel down by dividing the numerator (top number) and denominator (bottom number) by the same amount:

divide both the 56 and the 4723 by one of the factors of 56 e.g. 8:

4723 ÷ 8 = 590.375 (get this using long or short division)
56 ÷ 8 = 7

so your cancelled-down fraction is:

590.375
-----------
7

This can then be put back into your original format and done as a long or short division:

7)590.375

and rounded to the appropriate number of decimal places.

4723.000 divided by 56. First 56 will have to be divided into 472. Divide 5 into 47 to get an estimate of How many times 56 will go into 472. five will go into 47 nine times, but because 56 is close to 60 , it will only go into 472 eight times. Multiply 56x8, subtract it from 472 and bring down the 3. Now you will be dividing 56 into 243. 5 will go into 24 almost times 5 times, so 56 will probably go into 243 four times. It will, with a remainder of 63. If you want to go into decimal places, put a decimal after the 3 and add as many zeros as you want. your next step would be to divide 56 into 630. If you go to 3 decimal places, your answer will be 84.339

Start out with how many times 56 goes into 472

4723:56
--------------
56 goes into 473, 8 times
8 x 56 = 448
4723:56
--------------
448
-----------
472-448=24
pull down the 3
243:56 = 4
4*56 =224
243-224=19
As you have no more digits to pull down yu place a comma and ad a zero
190:56=3
3*56=168
190-168=......

and so on

so we got to 84.3

the finest way is to place in writing it as a fraction of a hundred. for example, 40 5/3 hundred could be decreased by way of dividing the two numbers by way of 3 which aspects 15/a hundred. proportion is only the form out of a hundred, so this is 15%.

work in multiples of 56 - because multiplying is the opposite operation to division, and it's easier to do.

Eg

10x56=560
20x56=1120
40x56=2240
80x56=4480

Now you are close to your answer....

5x56=280

so 85x56=4760...too much
and 84x56=4704 too small

Answer is 84 and a bit...a good method for answers to the nearest whole one.

86x56=4796
