Viruses that get installed rarely want to reboot your machine. They want to keep it up and running so they can do their work. Same for a hacker. Usually when a machine just shuts off one of 2 things has happened...

1. You had a kernel crash and the OS just shut down in the face of that.

2. The machine overheated and forced itself off on the hardware level to prevent damage.

Other things could have happened, but these are what I'd say are most common. Good luck.

Internet Explorer freezes, shuts down without warning, or the computer reboots.

This problem is often caused by out-of-date video drivers. Go to the Web site run by the manufacturer of your computer or video card and download, then install, the latest (non-beta) drivers for your video card.

Alternatively, you can try the following:

1.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.

2.
Click Display (in classic view of Windows XP), click the Settings tab, and then click Advanced.

3.
Click the Performance or Troubleshooting tab (depending on your operating system), and then reduce hardware acceleration a notch at a time until your system stabilizes.

Need more information than you are giving... did it go to the blue screen and do a memory dump.. or did it just shut down.. it may be over heating.. do you hear the fan running..?

Is your surge protector not working? You might want to get a UPS to plug it into.. to avoid electrical problems..

You are not going to get back any information that you did not save.. that is the reason for saving every few minutes.. it only takes one time of losing something that it took hours to do.. to remember to save, save, save...

that's possibly you have a lot of malwares bogging down your laptop. initiate the laptop with a boot CD (or secure mode) and do a test with a malwares remover, see if that helps. and don't run diverse antivirus/malwares on an identical time.
