In the novel “The Small Boat of Great Sorrows” Vlado and Pine gathered all the information needed to find the war criminal-Matek. However, Vlado didn’t follow the International War Crime rules and was laid off the case. At the same time, Vlado had found out many things about his father that he couldn’t give up now. Moreover, he decided to continue with the assignment because now it was personal. As the result, he found out everything about his father’s past and he also captured Matek. He was the hero of the story, who sacrificed his life for the International War Crime and for his curiosity to complete the puzzle he had started.
Since this novel was written in the year of 2003, it is still a modern novel which we teens can relate to. The setting of the novel is very interesting because it takes place in different cities throughout Europe. Most of the story took place in Bosnia, which is a city that is still hurt from the Second World War. This reminded me of my own country-Afghanistan-because the building, people and environment were badly hurt as well. Some of the characters such as the soldiers also reminded me of my past life in Afghanistan.
Undoubtedly, there were many events that related to my life back in Afghanistan. For instance, when Vlado had to flea from his home country he had left everything behind for a search of a better life. Similarly, when we left our country we had to leave everything behind and be lucky to be still alive. Furthermore, this was a very touching situation for me when Vlado had to leave his home country.
Again, this novel is linking to many people’s lives because it almost includes every possible sad situation. For example, the Second World War, Civil Wars, problems with the Police and a lot more is through out fully described which many people can relate to.
To conclude, this is the best novel that I have read in many years which includes different aspects of life, different emotions and feelings and of course lots of ups and downs, which makes the story interesting and suspenseful.
