Just take it slowly...maybe use it ONLY when you go out and when you are indoors (like on a lazy rainy day) you don't wear it. Then, after you are okay with doing that, only wear your eyeliner on special occasions. Then, after that, just don't wear it at all.

Don't worry about it...you've worn it so much, it's almost like it's a part of you, and that can be hard to deal with.
I would try gradually decreasing the amount of eyeliner you wear. Taking it off cold turkey would probably be too difficult...so I would just gradually wear less and less over a period of time. Or you could try another color of eyeliner, or different eye makeup, so you don't feel naked. Another thing you could do is, if you are just at home by yourself, take the makeup off, and get comfortable just walking around the house without any on. Gradually, you will get used to seeing yourself in this way, and will feel more comfortable with it.

I have exactly the same problem. I feel like I can't be seen out without my black eyeliner as it feels like I'm almost naked! I managed to just apply a slightly smaller amount. Do this bit by bit and see if you can do it that way. I tried going out with just eyeshadow and mascara on once and felt like everyone was staring because I looked so awful. You could also try a slightly lighter eyeliner, grey or something. Work up to a more pale colour. It probably sounds weird to a lot of people but I know exactly what you mean by this!

Do exactly as you said... gradually cut back on the eye line... if it takes months for you to break the habit... and that is what it is... a habit... you have gotten use to seeing yourself with it applied heavy... each week lighten up a little until you get to where you want to be as far as the amount... why quit completely???
I myself have wore eyeliner... for 30 years... I finally gave up and went and had it permanantly tatooed on about 4 years ago... love it... and have had a few touch ups since... so

I have this problem too, but I know some ways that might get you to stop. Gradually put less and less on as the days go on. Like today say it's up to your eyelid crease, tomorrow put it a little lower, and the next day lower and so on. Pretty soon it won't be as heavy and you will have small lines.

go from black to a brown colour. and gradually go to a lighter colour.
put on less. instead of lining your eyes with the eyeliner only put in on the top of your lids.
or try liquid liner cos it looks less thick

First...throw out all your eyeliner pencils! Then, buy a brown one....only one now....and not a pencil unless it's soft enough to smudge.
Tell yourself how surprised everyone will be at how nice you look without all that tacky black stuff on your eyes.
You really should be washing it all off every night before you go to bed.

avoid mirrors and keep buys you will forget about it and then just start not putting it on. that works for other things i dont see why it wouldnt work for your eyeliner issue.
