Not sure what the legal age in the UK is, here in the US where I live it's 12..
Each child is different my youngest is now 9 and I have begun leaving her home alone while I run to the corner market or post office (15-20 minute trips... We went over the rules which include..
1. Don't open the door for anyone even if you know them even me... (Anyone who belongs in the house has thier own key and can let themselves in...
2. If someone calls it's alright to tell a white lie and say "Mom's in the bathroom/shower can she call you back" and take a number...
3. There will be no cooking while Mom is not home.. Not even the microwave... I always have sandwich makings on hand and ready to go...
She has all the cell phone numbers (mine, her dads, and her older sisters (age 19) and her grandmas..)
I started leaving all of my kids home alone at about 8-9, depending on how responsible they were, working up to leaving them home for a few hours when they reach 12..
After 12 if I am going to be gone for more than a few hours I always ask thier grandmother to check in on them every couple hours and they have the option of going to her house (1/4 mile away) at anytime... If I am going to be gone overnight they can spend the day alone with the check ins but grandma either stays the night at our house or them at hers...
Staying home alone for a week I would say 17 but grandma would still do check-ins at least twice a day and they would always have the option of going to stay with her at anytime...

May be 15 if they really can be trusted and know that they should not do anything they know is gonna get theyself or the parents in trouble with the law. Because it seems that the moment u allow them to stay home alone something happens and then mom & dad are in trouble because they left the kids home alone( the very first time) so unless ur kids are truely TRULEY responsible then it's ok at 15. And I know that sometimes u just have to try to trust they at a much younger age u have to leave them home, due to the fact that u may not can afford a sitter. But make sure they are responsible and know that they have to do they're part in keep the house in one piece. Good Luck

For a week alone at home? Not until they are 16 or 17. Get a babysitter or have them stay with a relative if they are younger than that. If they are staying home while you run errands then maybe 11 or 12 is a good age but not at home alone over night--especially not for a week alone.

depends on the person and the vicinity. if child is of smaller ages get a babysitter. but if she/he can eat, wash etc.. on a regular system after 10 would be enough i guess
