This is such a loaded question. I hate this question.
I picked the other people when my aunt asked me this ten years ago. She was miffed.
This question only serves to tell what the answers priorities are.
I joined the military and it caused my family heartache. My mother is in constant fear for my safety.
I joined to save/help others. My friends, countrymen, and family. In this way I chose the others.
Save from death you mean? I would now choose my spouse and kids because I would believe in their cause to help others. The other thousand I don't know if they had it in their hearts to help or hinder.

From what? There are some things we can save people from and others that we can't. Be more specific.

I'd save all the poor land animals cause we all know that those nasty sea creatures are gross and deserve to be eaten......

although I feel that we all resonate to one universal vibration, and that everyone is important and worthy, it would have to be my children....spouse also, if I ever re-married.
