Indie bands must be on an Independent label, and most of those were bought up by the conglomerates in the 1980s. Try;
House of Love
Pop Will Eat Itself
Neds Atomic Dustbin
New Fast Automatic Daffodils
Jesus Jones
New Model Army

Indie's a bit of a dirty word in my mind these days, somwthing of a catch all phrase for anything not considered pop. I mean
The Minutemen
The White Stripes
Jet
The Pipettes
Air
The Smiths
have all been described as indie by various hacks...
what matters is if the music is any good :)
but the definition and list on this page is worth checking: http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=77:2687
