is it because of the threat that comes with it or the luck that awaits? or just for the fun of contributing to the endless chain of senseless mails?

I think they do it for fun..I know where my delete button is and I use it

They are tricked into it by the wording of the forwards, whether it's a bogus threat or guilt-trip, or even a suggestion such as "This is fun! Spread the fun to your friends!" The forward does the thinking for them, just long enough for them to forward/reshare.
