PLU stands for Price Look Up
Stores use it as a code to type in to the till when a product doesnt have an individual barcode, like fruit and veg, or on large items that may be heavy to lift there will likely be a barcode and a PLU. Its basically just a short code for the checkout operator.

its a shortened version of a barcode usually put on larger heavier items that you wouldnt expect to pick up and physically scan! xx

I've often wondered that too, i used to work in Tesco and I asked the supervisor even she didn't know what it stood for.
