how did a superpower break up just like *that*?

Basically they went broke, reagan ran them into the ground with the arms race. Despite what you are told, what makes superpowers super is their economic strength. The USA is the big dog and as long as the economy continues at the rate it has for the last five years we will continue.
China is hot on our tail however, which is why I think they will control N. Korea, it would hurt China economically and I believe they will do what is necessary to protect their economy.

Like one poster said, people got ticked off at being run by a big govt. so they tore down a huge wall in Germany and sent Gorbie packing.
