I've heard something like 2 months of paychecks or something like that? is there a rule of thumb?

The truth is there is no standard amount people spend on an engagement ring. It depends on what part of the world they are in, what stone sizes are in the ring, and whether or not the ring is custom made. Jewelry design is an art. Some artists consider their work priceless. Then again it also depends on how much the couple is willing to spend. The best thing to do is to buy the one you like and that suits you best because you'll be wearing it the rest of your life. The value is in the sentiment. You may find exactly what you want for less than some of the more expensive settings.

I agree, the cost doesn't matter. It's all about picking something you think she'd like, not spending for the sake of it. And a nice proposal. I didn't get the best proposal ever and I do wish it had been ait more special. I would never look at the ring he picked by himself and wish for anything different though. The 2 or 3 month rule is ridiculous, invented by jewelry shops and unless jewelry is very important to your girlfriend I think she'd be a bit embarrassed with something so expensive. I think my fiance spent about half a month's gross salary on my ring and I still think that is a lot. If I had to save 3 month's salary (and is it gross or net I always wonder?!) it would take me about 2.5 years of hard saving - I would much rather my fiance didn't waste 2.5 years waiting and having little spare money for fun!

I don't really think love has a price, just make sure she will like it. You should know her style, take her shopping and let her show you some that she likes, then you'll have an idea. Don't get me wrong, women like big rocks but, there's so much more to it than that, you need the perfect proposal and you need to truly mean it when you ask her to marry you. This is only suppose to happen once in a lifetime, make it count. Hope I've helped, good luck!

There are no rules to how much you should spend on a ring. Depending on what you can afford. If your girlfriend loves you she will understand and if she doesn't than you shall reconsider if she's the right one for you. My husband spend over 10 grand on mind and that's b/c he could afford it. I have friends who expect their boyfriend to spend more than what they could afford and 5 yrs later still trying to pay for the ring. A ring is important to a girl b/c it's something she will wear for the rest of her life but I think deep down having a happy life with your love one is more important. Good luck.
I personally preferred quality over quantity. Every girl is different you may ask your girlfriend what she preferred.

there's no rule of thumb. Just buy what you can afford, and what you think she might like, or just pick one together. You don't want to spend the rest of your lives paying off a ring!!!!

Spend what you can afford at the time, then years later 5 year or ten year anniversary you can always up size it. I think if she really loves you any ring will do
Don't be cheap on the stone if you can afford a really nice one. Cheap larger diamond show flaws.

my hubby bought me an engagment ring for £100. i knew he didn't have a lot of money but i was still very disappointed...

everyone kept asking to look at it and i was so embarassed by their reactions!!

-they were like... "OH, HOW CUTE"- trust me, no girl wants to hear that when showing off her ring!!

don't break the bank but show you saved for it... show her she's special and valuable... spend at least a grand... save for a year if you have to, it'll be worth it!!

I heard that some people pay 100,000 just for an engagemant ring. If i would have to buy one, i would buy it at the dollarama

Its 3 months salary, if you looking to get married you may want to read up on your man manual under the newlywed section. its not knowing stuff like this that'll get you in the doghouse.
