If your iPod is advertised to be 30 Gig (e.g.) then the real space avalable for storage would be 1/2 Gig less. This is because iPod has its own file system/ software and space is reserved to store all such information.
You can connect iPod to computer and Windows Explorer would show you the total capacity and remaining. ITunes 7 can let you do that as well. In fact iTunes 7 will show you break-up of the space taken between music, video, pics, podcasts etc.

To find out how many GB's ur Ipod has, look on the back of the ipod. then you should see a faint silver font with the GB capacity of your ipod.

plug your ipod in your comp. Then open "My Computer" and look for a new disk drive (usually named Removable Disk). Right click on it and choos properties. The new window will show your about the formatted space, free space and used space. And it's written in English, so i wont go into details.
