A CHESS BOARD has 64 small squares. But I'm assuming this is a homework question, so you have to look beyond the small squares and consider that when four of the small squares are lined up 2x2 it makes another square. There's a bunch of 2x2 squares, 3x3 squares, 4x4 squares, and so on until you've counted all of the squares. It's time consuming, but you should start to see a pattern as you count them all up. 64 squares. 8 down and 8 across. I never bothered to look at the squares in the squares for they have no meaning in the game.

64 is, of course, the correct answer if you only count the individual squares...
But to expand on the above answer, if you look at every possible 'square' (i.e. 2x2, 3x3, 4x4), then you get 204 squares altogether. (Two hundred four is off the top of my head, but I believe that's what it comes out to).
