Depends on the kid. If it's more than 12 hours a day, get him up and make him mow the yard or do something active. But kids, especially teenagers, can sleep A LOT because of the growing pains and changing hormones they're experiencing. They usually grow out of it by the time they hit 16 or so.

7-8 hours is fine. I actually can't sleep more than 8 hours (the longest I've slept without any disturbance is 8 hours 20 minutes on a normal night (that is, not new years eve and similair).

I would say at least 8 hours, but 10 or 11 is alright too. Kids burn a ton of energy and really need sleep to recharge those batteries...
