What is it that you want to do? Solve for x? Find the derivative? We need a little more information about what you mean before we can give a good answer.

Do you mean a function of x factorial? I am assuming not. Also, an equation is not a function. What you probably mean is to find y in terms of x.

-3x + 4y = 11
4y = 11 + 3x
y = f(x) = (11 + 3x)/4 = (11/4)x + 3/4

So f(x) = (11/4)x + 3/4

You can think of a function as an operation...or as a task...like a computer does...input and output.

For instance, y=x+2.

If you plug in x=1, then y is 3.
If you plug in x=2, then y is 4.

You can see that "Y" *is a function* of X. In other words, the value for y, depends on what x is.

As such, you can replace "y" with the notation f(x) or "function of x". It's a simple concept, but calculus teachers like to confuse everyone.

So, for your question:

-3x +4y = 11.

a) First, get everything that doesn't contain "y" on to the other side.

4y = 11 + 3x

b) Now, we want y left all by itself. To do this, we need to divide everything by 4.

y = (11+3x) / 4

Now we have y all alone. You've solved for "y".

As I described earlier, since this "y" value will depend on what "x" is, "y" "is a function of" x.

f(x) = (11+3x) / 4

Hope that helped.

Haven't I already answered this question?

Isolate y by taking the -3x over to the other side and the sign changes:

4y = 3x+11

Then divide everything by 4 and you get:

y = 3/4x + 11/4
