I had unprotected sex, did not use any birthcontrol. However, an IUD can work as an emergency contraception after unprotected sex. My question is whether 10 days is too late to use the IUD as emergency contraception?

They might ir might not bc the IUD prevents implantation the fertilized egg would have inplanted already 10 days! They wont insert it if you have had unprotected sex usually they wait until you are on your period to ensure that you are not pregnant. I would let the DR and they might wait an additional 5 days to test and then insert the IUD.

Once in place the iud is as effective as surgery

It only takes about 24 hours to get pregnant. So if you had unprotected sex and only had the IUD put in 10 days later than you could have been pregnant 9 days ago. And you can still get pregnant with an IUD also but it is about 80-90% effective

As long as you weren't pregnant at the time of insertion, you should be as protected as possible with the IUD.

first they will have to do a pregnacy test on you and they will have to do a pelvic exam to make sure you are not pregnant and do not have any infections.they may also do some blood work.and then when you have it inserted they wait until you are either on your period or they wait until the end of your period to insert it.why because when you are on your period your uterus walls contract and expand thats why you have cramps and thats how you have your period which makes it easier to insert.if you want more info vistit a planned parent hood site
