you can only prepare by making sure you have your pads/tampons, pain killers, heating pads, and chocolate in advance. if you think it's coming soon carry a few tampons or pads with you.
if you've NEVER had it before you might want to practice a little with the supplies but it's not necessary.

By prepare I assume you haven't had your first period yet. There isn't much preparing before hand. You might want to do some research on line to know what to expect your first time and how to use tampons or pads.
Other than that its a natural progression and in time you will know exactly what to do.

get a variety of tampons and sizes.
get a good facewash, periods make pimples and you wont want that.
if you are worried about cramps, dont spend the money on the womens pms and period crap, just go out and get some extra strength tylenol or ibuprofen.

stock up on midol, tampons, pads. make sure you get Midol Maximum strength menstrual, for tampons, dont get the cardboard ones, get the plastic easy glide ones, Always pads are the best. hope this helps! :D
