She needs to see a psychologist or a counsellor to find out the cause of the problem - the two sets of symptoms may be related.
I wonder why her doctor won't help? Surely s/he could refer this girl to someone appropriate??? This is neglectful - the girl evidently needs help. Severe depression won't easily go away on its own - proper professional help is needed.

Support her as much as you can.
I would definitely look into getting a new doctor. My thought has always been that doctors are supposed to help their patients, and it sounds like hers isn't doing his job. I'm sure there are still physicians who care for the well being of patients. If her weight is treated, her depression should show signs of disappearing, as most times overweight persons do tend to get depressed. (If some of our celebrities would create realistic images, we could help this problem, but that's another topic!)
Ask the new physician about diets she can start. I'll tell you that cutting out fried foods, sugars and sodas (especially sodas) will start her to a better path alone. Being overweight she has an increased risk for heart disease and diabetes, also, so you can bring that up with the doctor if he seems reluctant to a diet program. If he doesn't care that his patient is risking her health, find a new one or go to the Health Board and let them know your situation. I'm all about exposing wankers, so if you don't find anyone in your area to help this beautiful soul, call the local news I-team to investigate why the doctor won't help, and why the Board of Health won't do anything either. I bet you'll get a response then!
Start an exercise regime and be a workout partner to help encourage her. Start with walks around the neighborhood. While you walk together, it's a perfect time to talk. Try to help her work out her feelings, and be active in helping her change her life. Once she starts to drop the weight, she should feel better about herself. Best of luck in helping her, and make her feel like the most beautiful soul you know.

First of all you need to go back to your doctor and be very firm with him or her, if you can, take someone with you as support. Ask the doctor if he cannot help you to refer you to someone who can. Start with working out why you are depressed, is it because of your weight or is your depression causing your weight issue.
Your need to sort out one thing at a time. Once you have got help for your weight problem, the depression may lift aswell. Dont give up. I know plenty of people who are obese and not doing anything about it. You are being the stronger person by accepting that you need help.
Good Luck and dont give up.

CHANGE YOUR GP!!! I urge you to find another GP. Nobody should be left to just deal with depression. There are doctors out their who can find her a good counsellor and if needed put her onto anti-depressants. Do not give up, this girl clearly needs help and can get it! She deserves to be taken seriously and her doctor should be reported. Good luck and all the best, please let us know how you get on.

She is depressed because she's overweight. So she needs to get to gribs about her weight and accept she is overweight then comes the part of the solution where she does something about it. Once she's got the determination to do it and achieves positive self esteem her and she accepts her body she'll be happier and less depressed.

She should contact Overeaters Anonymous - www.oa.org.
Irish phone numbers are:
086 -3526457
021- 48 67907
The most important thing is for her to know that there *is* support available and that there are other people who have felt like her.
Best of luck
