I can't get my computer to record my voice. I'm positive my last Dell laptop had a microphone built in, but even if I turn on the microphone in the task bar, my voice doesn't register when I test it. How do I know if I have to buy an external microphone or if one is built in and I'm not using it properly???

Note:
If the laptop was preconfigured when you purchased it then it should work first time, with no problems.
Try:
Take a look on the task bar at the bottom of the screen, to the right you will see the "system tray" where the current time is displayed. You should see a yellow icon of a speaker (this may vary depending on hardware!), double click on it to open a window allowing you to control audio volumes. Make sure that the microphone volume has not been turned right down. If this is not the case I would consider purchasing a microphone.
Else:
If you look on Dell's website at your particular laptop model it will tell you if it has a microphone, if its not mentioned it doesn't have one.

You connected it to your speakers? Do they have a Microphone-In Jack? Usually they just have a head phone connector. If this is the case, instead connect the microphone to your sound card on the back of your computer, to the Mic In connector. Then give it a shot. You may have to go into the Control Panel | Sounds And Audio Devices | Audio tab, ensure your sound card shows up correctly and also make sure the volume on the microphone is selected and high enough. Then give it another shot.

Dells are horrible. Get A Mac. You can do way more on a Mac out of the box than you can do at all on a Dell.

It is already built in. Maybe, you need to go into your device settings to make sure it is working properly.

Why aren't you asking Dell?
Asking a bunch of yahoodiots seemed the better choice?
What ever are you thinking?
