My kids are now 16 and 18, If I were smart, I would still have them in the rooms hidden.

I didn't stop using the monitor until after my daughter turned 3 YEARS old. (Yes- "years"- not a typo). It was b/c she was born very premature (at 25 weeks) and initially came home on an apnea monitor. She wasn't done with that until she was 8 months old. I was just paranoid that she would stop breathing. Don't let society 'scare' you into stopping its use until YOU are ready. Everyone's circumstances are different and you need not explain yourself to anyone. It's not harming the baby, or anyone, so there's no rush at all. You do what feels best for you and your family.

I had a small apartment with my first 3 kids and didn't need one. Now that we are in a larger house I have one for my 5 month old son- and still using it. I'd say you stop using the monitor when YOU feel you don't need it anymore. I've heard of parents still using a monitor for small children who are past the baby stage. What can it hurt? It's like an extra set of ears listening for your child. Put away when you feel like it. You'll know when you don't need it any more.

Use it as long as you like. It's your crutch, not the baby's. If it makes you feel better, go ahead and use it. I used the motion sensor on my daughter's monitor until she was about 6 months old, then she moved too much and into weird corners the sensor couldn't pick up. It went off all the time. I think we quit using the sound monitor when we were upstairs with her about the same time, but we still used it if we were watching t.v. downstairs and she was upstairs. She is now 2 and 3 months, and after I put her to bed I still sometimes turn on the monitor so I can go watch t.v. downstairs. I worry that she'll get out of bed and come looking for me and be scared and confused.

I see no harm in using your baby monitor for as long as you want. At some point your child will object if it remains in the room too long! If it gives you a feeling of security and reassurance why not use the available technology?
I think that you really answered your own question: stop when you no longer feel the need or when you are ready.

I wouldn't worry, my eldest is now 5 1/2 and I also have a 3 year old and a 4 month old and the monitor has been constantly on every night since my eldest was born. No matter how old they are it is reassuring to be able to hear them in case they wake up for whatever reason. It gives you great peace of mind, so in my opinion leave it on and be reassured knowing your baby is within hearing range.

We don't use a baby monitor, haven't since we discovered with our first child that we could hear any significant noise just fine without it. The insignificant noises were just annoying and kept us awake. After 6 babies now we still only use it very rarely in a special circumstance, like if it's very hot out and we have a fan running on high in our room that might prevent us from hearing the baby.

My hubby and I stopped using the baby monitor after 6 months. Our home is meduim sized and the walls are thin which makes for easy listening of our twin girls crying, talks, laughing, etc.
Hope this helps you.. :-)

My home is small, so I didn't really need one except for when my daughter didn't sleep through the night. Thankfully, she started doing that at 3 months of age. Since then, I rarely use it unless I nap when she does.
