The U.S. is only extremely dependent on oil from Canada, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, and Nigeria (Angola and Iraq are the next largest suppliers). Now, let me tell you why we can't switch to alternative fuels.
1) Too expensive. Oil is the cheapest by far.
2) Planes/Trucks/Tanks/Generators can't run on alternative fuels.
3) Do you own an electric car? Didn't think so. People don't want to give up oil.

The so called Oil Crisis, is a good thing, because now the country is starting to pull out some of that new technology that has been dormant, we had the ability to create alternative sources for a long time and just wanted to drain as much money out as possible before things go too ugly. Also these other countries are starting to see "Oh" the Americans may have been hiding other resources, we had better lower our prices before they have the capability to cut us off completely.

Well, this administration has managed to alienate and anger all of the countries that the U.S. is higly dependent on oil from.
But research in alternative fuels, especially coal, should be looked into and developed, of course.

We need to drill for more oil and use it and burn it then when its gone use something else.
That is what will happen. Until there is an economic necessity, there will not be any alternative fuels invented or used widely.
Oil is still a bargain.
That's reality.
