A Dr. will insert fingers into the vagina of a pregnant woman to feel that the fetus is in the right place. It makes for better palpation. YES woman visit male Gynecologists. Most women would not refuse to allow the Dr. to examine her in this way, because it's a matter of 'trust'.
As for the % of women who have a male Gynecologist, I would think the % is high. Again, there's a trust factor. I get the impression from your question that you're suspicious of something, or trying to make fun of the situation.

Dr's examine with their hands simply so they can determine the size & growth of the womb & fetus, and any changes to the cervix whether it's starting to efface and thin for possible miscarriage or prepping for birth, ligament development of womb attachment, placenta growth and placement. Most insurance companies will not pay for more than 1-2 ultrasounds and therefore Dr's must physically examine the uterus. They will insert 1 to 2 fingers and then press down on top of the abdomen with the other hand to feel development of the baby/womb. I went to a group OB/GYN clinic and found the male doctors were just as excellent as the female doctors. Most Dr's now have a medical assistant present during the physical exam for any potential malpractice suits. I don't think there is any right or wrong percentage for getting an OB/GYN. It boils down to who a woman feels most comfortable with and the medical expertise of a Dr.

You may not be aware, A few years before, All leading & academically famous Gynaecologists were Males only. Still a large no of Graduate medicoes(males) are wlling to take Gynae & Obstetrics as Post Graduate Study. In Rural Areas & even in slums of Metro city like Bombay, you can still find people thinking Female Doctors as Nurse & perceive males only as Doctor. As a legal & safe procedure, there is standard practise of having a Female Attendent whle internal examination is being done, specifically when a male doctor is examining. Some ladies even refuse Internal Examination even by Female Doctors! The Internal Examination is done to assess Internal Pelvic Size, Any Abnormality of Uterus, cervix before delivery & Progress of delivery process during delivery.

I used to have a male gyne and he delivered both my children. The reason they insert their fingers is to check for different things. In the nonpregnant female he is checking the placement of the cervix and to make sure their are no abnormalities. In the pregnant female, he is checking for placement of the mucosal plug and also location of fetus. I am sure there are some women who have refused to have a man do such an exam. Me personally, if a person spends thousands of dollars to get a doctorate, and is knowledgeable, I don't care if they are male or female.

There is nothing sexual in what a doctor is doing, it is an essential part of the evaluation of the woman during pregnancy and labour. If a woman is more comfortable with a female doctor, then she should ask. Men seeing a female urologist are in a similar position. All doctors nowadays have a female chaperone present when performing intimate examinations of women.

They do this to check the health of your reproductive organs and to measure dialation during labor. I have a female OB/GYN., I will not use male b/c they don't know what we're going thru. But I had a male when I delivered my daughter (my Dr was not on call), and I didn't like him at all, he didn't seem at all sympathetic to my needs.
