I know that this title used to be held by the Tyrannosaurus Rex, but I'm sure that there were some more recent discoveries of carnivores that were even bigger - I think one of them was called Gigantosaurus, but I don't know anything else.

Were there any bigger carnivores than Gigantosaurus?

I'm just interested.

There are three meat-eating dinosaurs that will battle it out for the title of supreme-biggest-meat-eating dinosaur: Tyrannosaurus rex, Giganotosaurus, and Spinosaurus. Here's the stats:

Tyrannosaurus rex
Length: 40-50 feet
Weight: 6 tons
Fear factor: teeth up to 13 inches long
Lived: 65 million years ago Where: North America

Giganotosaurus
Length: 47 feet
Weight: 8 tons
Fear factor: 8-inch-long serrated teeth
Lived: 95 million years ago
Where: Argentina

Spinosaurus
Length: 55 feet
Weight: 8 tons
Fear factor: long, crocodile-like jaws
Lived: 100 million years ago Where: Argentina, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria scale)

So the biggest would have to be Spinosaurus. It has the greatest weight AND length. I wrote about this topic on my blog where it has a little visual diagram of these three dinosaurs (see source below)

Gigantosaurus seems like the largest known at present. There are bigger ones, but they are herbivores. Also, big sea creatures that don't count as dinosaurs.

Gigantosaurus, though it was only slightly bigger, in the same family (closely related) and not as powerful (the structure of the head indicated that it is not as powerful a biter as Tyranosaurus and probably scavenge more than Tyranosaurus) so Tyranosaursus will still own its ***.
