What is the safest way to use music sharing software i.e. Limewire?

Can I download into my shared folder then burn to a disk or save to a flash drive? I dont want to get prosecuted!!!!

2.People get get access to your computer
3.You can lose all your files
4.Many people have lost passwords and accounts to these sorts of things.
