It happens if you have conflicting software on your computer. Or If you do not have an Antivirus, antispyware, firewall. Or If your windows registry is filled with obsolete entries. Or If you have a lot of programs running at windows startup, or you have low disk space etc.
Try to go through each problem seperately.
1)To begin with, click on start > run
type msconfig. Press OK
Click on STARTUP tab.
Uncheck all entries there. Press OK. Reboot the computer.
2)if possible uninstall some programs from your computer which are not essential.
(start > control panel >add/remove programs)
If your computer hangs doing that, then press F8 during reboot, and select to open the computer is SAFE MODE. Then uninstall some programs.
3) Download and install a registry cleaner.
Free RegScrubXP registry cleaner
http://www.sofotex.com/RegScrubXP-download_L7528.html
After running the above program, you can remove obsolete entries from your windows registry.
4)You need an antivirus, an antispyware, and a firewall on your pc. In case you do not have, here is a suggestion.
AVG free antivirus, Ewido(Now called AVG free antispyware), Zonealarm free firewall.

Its a virus alright Im guessing. I had the same problem.
Probably BRONTOK. It hides. Now go to task manager by clickin ctrl+alt+delete at the same time.
click "l" to go to "lsass.exe" if its the coreect one it will be appx "00" under the heading "CPU" and if itsa virus it will be with a capital "i" which looks like an "L" as in
"Isass.exe". See there is no difference in the two.
It will also be usoing alot of the cpu like "34" + or maybe "99" straight!!
Check this out.
In a normally performing system..the "System idle process" ha "99" under the "CPU" heading.

start task manager before you try to open a program. (right click the bar at the bottom and it will be in the pop up window)
you need to locate which process hits 100%.
google that process to what it is and if it's a neccessary component.
if it isn't, you may be able to remove it from the start up programs so that it doesn't lock up again.

If it's a newer PC, you might have a burn-in failure of some sort. If not, I doubt you have any incorrect jumper settings or the like. If you can, try and open up Task Manager to find the program that's eating your processing power, it sounds like it might be some form of malware. Or, when all else fails, reformat. =P

A virus might be messing with you. Try safe mode, and identify the program wich is using the cpu the most. Delete it or rename and then delete it.

You have a hard drive problem. You probably have (or have had) a number of viruses... or your computer is just so "old" that the hard drive is going out of it. It's not a big deal, but... it's gonna cost a bit of money. Go to your favorite computer store and get it checked out, but that is most likely the problem. I pray to gawd you decided to backup your computer.

If your computer hangs or reboots while you are working on it , it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software. This problem can be solved by uninstalling new softwares, updating device drivers and making minor configuration changes. Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yk5zpr
