Studies have shown in the case of alcohol (the most abused drug), fetal development in the womb causes fetal alcohol syndrome. This causes some physical abnormalities and changes in the brain effecting the development of judgment and or mental retardation.

Most chemical toxins have been linked with the development of cancer, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease when inhaled. Marijuana, for instance, has more tars than cigarettes. Tars are more harmful than the nicotine in cigarettes.
Taking the chemicals By mouth can cause intestinal cancers and or abnormalities. The long term effects of many chemicals and toxins are not yet known.
